Thyroid Ultrasound

Thyroid nodules are very common, occurring in up to 50% of patients. The best imaging method for evaluation of thyroid nodules is ultrasound. Ultrasound is also frequently used to guide the needle into a nodule during a thyroid nodule fine needle aspiration (biopsy). Dr. Makhija is trained in performing diagnostic thyroid ultrasound which is offered at the visit to get immediate bedside diagnosis and alleviates patient’s concerns.  If you are seeking a thyroid expert or need a 2nd opinion for goiter, thyroid nodules, thyroid cysts, thyroid mass, call 559-272-9192 or email us for an appointment.

Q: Where is the thyroid gland located?

A: Thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located at the front of the neck. It has two lobes (right and left) and a connecting tissue called isthmus.

Q: What do I expect while getting a thyroid neck ultrasound?

A: It is a simple bedside procedure using an ultrasound probe on the skin and gel to view the anatomical structure of the thyroid gland. It can be done at your routine in person visit. After the completion of the procedure, the images are viewed on a screen and discussed with the patient during the visit with Dr. Makhija.

Thyroid and neck ultrasound are also indicated for post thyroid cancer care and surveillance.

Q: Can Dr. Makhija view my previous ultrasound images?

A: Yes. Some imaging centers provide access to external physicians to view the images. Alternate option is to request a CD of the ultrasound from the imaging center or the hospital and those can be viewed by Dr. Makhija.
