World Health Organization defines, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. As physicians, we invest years in training to protect our patients' health. What if there were no illnesses? Well, our role becomes even more vital—for prevention, education, and spreading awareness on health and well-being.
Life involves a journey from birth to death, passing through various stages. In this journey, we all deserve to live our best lives by making intentional choices that lead to optimal living. While genetics may be beyond our control, we have the power to shape our well-being through our habits, choices, and decisions.
Health and well-being go beyond just being free of illness; they include experiencing a positive state individually and collectively. It's about the quality of life and the ability of individuals and societies to contribute meaningfully to the world. Achieving well-being requires conscious decisions, and here are a few essential choices to enhance your health:
Food as your daily vitamin: Select foods that not only energize but also nourish your body, keep it simple. Our old saying about eating fruits and vegetables still holds. These are real foods. For actionable steps, delve into my blog on three transformative measures.
Embrace movement in various forms: walking, dancing, running, or any exercise that liberates you from sedentary postures. Take conscious breaks in between your work hours, even if it is a minute. Your body will “thank” you.
Sleep Hygiene: Prioritize positive sleep habits, as outlined in this document I’ve created for you. A well-rested body contributes significantly to overall well-being.
Mindfulness: Learn the art of responding, not merely reacting to life's situations. Incorporate breathwork and moments of pause to cultivate resilience. You’ve heard this one: Mindful NOT Mind-full. I am sharing some tips, the science and simple steps on how you can start breath meditation. Read Now
Toxic substance avoidance: Steer clear of exposure to harmful substances, excessive alcohol, smoking, and drugs. Safeguarding your well-being includes making conscious choices to protect your body.
Connections: Recognize the profound impact of interpersonal relationships. Step into the world, immerse yourself in nature, frequent the local market, exchange smiles with strangers, express gratitude, and engage with your neighbors.
In essence, achieving health and well-being is a holistic journey—a delicate dance between our choices and the symphony of our existence. As we move through life's stages, let's take on the responsibility to live our best lives, contributing to the world with purpose and meaning.
